Love Lost
At work today, a bright-eyed young man entered the shop as happy as a clam. He was carrying a baby carseat.
"Oh! A new addition?!?" I asked.
The man brought the basket right up to the counter and proudly showed us his new daughter as if she were a golden egg resting softly on feathers.
"Wow! What a beautiful new model it is too!" I said in awe.
Her tiny slit eyes were closed and she twitched her nose in her sleep. Her light brown skin looked so soft and thin, and her light brown hair lay in wisps on her crown.
The mother and a little duckling of a boy soon followed in. The father placed the baby basket in the corner.
"Is that your new sister?" I asked the little boy who couldn't stop moving. He was so excited and playful. Mother looked worn out but endearing and content. Her belly was still round. We congratulated them.
Was it fate that a beautiful, loving family came in to eat some of the best sandwiches in all of Austin? I decided I couldn't let them get away without them knowing how I felt.
So just before they left I said, "Congratulations once again. Do you have any idea how rare it is to see a happy, beautiful family? It's very rare."
Mother blushed. Little duckling was hopping around looking for something or someone to play with. Father picked up the basket and he says, "Well, like I said before, there are good days and there are bad days, but you get through them together. It all works out in the end."

I am with you in that moment, so sweet.
Me again. I remember the early days of your infancy, carrying you into cafes and restaurants, with others noticing and soaking up the good vibes. Such a sweet memory. As Thanksgiving nears, I am thinking of you constantly and thinking about many years of creative food-building and laughter.
